A Waterfront City with Winery Country on Its Doorstep
Geelong has grown into one of Victoria's most popular wedding destinations, and it is easy to see why. As an experienced Melbourne wedding photography team, we have watched this region come into its own. The city sits on the western shore of Corio Bay, which means west-facing waterfront ceremonies catch the kind of golden afternoon light that most inland venues simply cannot replicate. Add the heritage architecture of the Geelong CBD, the Bellarine Peninsula wine region just twenty minutes east, and the rugged granite outcrops of the You Yangs to the north, and you have a location with genuine range.
We have photographed weddings at The Pier Geelong, where floor-to-ceiling glass frames the bay and the city skyline sits behind the bridal table. The Carousel on the waterfront promenade makes for a playful portrait backdrop that couples rarely expect to work as well as it does. Further along the foreshore, Limeburners Point offers a quieter, more natural setting where native coastal scrub meets the water's edge. It is one of our favourite spots for couple portraits when you want something that feels less curated and more real.
Out on the Bellarine Peninsula, the winery venues offer a different mood entirely. Jack Rabbit Vineyard sits high on a ridge above Bellarine with panoramic views stretching from the You Yangs across to the bay. The light there in late afternoon is extraordinary, and the terraced lawn ceremony space means guests look out over the vines while the couple stands framed against open sky. Terindah Estate, closer to the coast near Portarlington, blends vineyard and ocean views in a way that very few Victorian venues manage. We have worked both venues enough times to know the angles, the timelines, and the backup positions if the weather turns.
Within the city itself, Geelong's wool-era buildings and restored laneways offer a moody, textured backdrop for couples who prefer urban character over open landscapes. The old wool stores in the west end, the bluestone facades along Moorabool Street, and the garden spaces around Eastern Park all photograph beautifully, particularly in the cooler months when overcast skies bring out the stone tones.
The You Yangs Regional Park, about twenty minutes north of the city, is a hidden option for adventurous couples. The granite peaks give you an elevated bushland setting that feels remote despite being close to town. We have used the Flinders Peak lookout for sunset portraits that look like they could have been taken hours from civilisation.
